The mouth is in for a treat as only the best Riesling components come together in this 2016 offering. Lime leaf, pear, and white Rainier cherries greet upon entry. Green apple and pronounced granite mineral elements finish off with racy acidity and tension completing what will likely again be the must have Riesling of 2016.
A long motorbike ride down a cool rocky mountain pass with your shirt off, the summer wind normally warm but chilled due to your high rate of speed. The wine to please yourself first then others if there is any left. Be selfish.

2016 was an excellent winemaking year, both in the vineyard and in the winery. Although a hot start to the season had us slightly concerned that we may have had a second drought year in the making, late June and early July thankfully delivered some unseasonably cool conditions. This moderated the ripening cycle at the estate and slowed sugar generation in the fruit while allowing a longer physiological ripening period to let the grapes build an optimal balance of both acid and sugar.
While we tried to pinpoint a clear spring release victor at bottling time in February 2017, the whole team agreed that the new spring white wines and rosé are all immediately quaffable and each will deliver some of the best varietal expressions we have seen in our young history at 50th Parallel. The 2016 aromatic wines will be released in March 2017.
Don’t let this wine evaporate in it’s first release year. Be disciplined and hide some behind your French Burgundy in your cellar for 4-5 years to see what rewards this top medal winner will reveal.
Selectively hand harvested and whole bunch pressed with elongated skin contact in press. Cold settled and fermented icy cold for an extended period to bring out minerality and preserve acidic freshness. Fermentation was stopped with slight residual sweetness to balance the acidity.
Food Pairing Notes
Those cool people in your life. This wine is the all-time first choice to pair with sharp hard cheeses. A go-to food favourite versatile enough to serve with fresh fruits, salads, oysters (raw and or smoked), and most crustaceans. However if food is hard to find it is still delicious chilled on it’s own. Serve between 3-6 degrees Celcius in a white aromatic glass.
